I am Albert Einstein, and I heartily approve of this blog, insofar as it seems to believe both in science and the importance of intellectual imagination, uncompromised by out of date emotions such as the impulse toward conventional religious beliefs, national aggression as a part of patriotism, and so on. As I once remarked, the further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge. Certainly the application of the impulse toward blind faith in science whereby authority is treated as some kind of church is to be deplored. As I have also said, the only thing that ever interfered with my learning was my education. I am Freeman Dyson, and I approve of this blog, but would warn the author that life as a heretic is a hard one, since the ignorant and the half informed, let alone those who should know better, will automatically trash their betters who try to enlighten them with independent thinking, as I have found to my sorrow in commenting on "global warming" and its cures.

Companies back down on HIV∫AIDS claim

Astonishing revelation on Barnes blog by Culshaw

Elite critics reach critical mass on expanded blog

In an extraordinary development, companies making HIV tests are backing down on their claim that HIV is the undisputed cause of AIDS.

Mathematician Rebecca Culshaw has just posted a very important note on the blog Barnesworld, now renamed “You Bet Your Life”, at Dear Dr. Culshaw: “Well, What About Those Tests?”.

Culshaw has discovered that the inserts with AIDS tests show that the companies that make them have been backing down over the past year or two in the firmness of their statements that HIV is the cause of AIDS. She writes:

I doubt even more that the majority of medical practitioners are aware of the subtle but significant shift in the language used in HIV test kits since the beginning of the AIDS era. For example, from 1984 until the very recent past, test kit inserts contained the unambiguous statement “AIDS is caused by HIV”. In 2002, the OraSure toned down that statement to say: “AIDS, AIDS-related complex and pre-AIDS are thought to be caused by HIV.”But just this year, in a remarkable – and potentially significant – shift in thinking, the trend seems to be toward making an even less committal statement. For example, Abbott Diagnostic’s ELISA test insert contains the following sentence: “Epidemiologic data suggest that the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by at least two types of human immunodeficiency viruses, collectively known as HIV.”

Vironostika appears to be even less willing to support a true causal role, as their 2006 test kit insert says: “Published data indicate a strong correlation between the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and a retrovirus referred to as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).”

This remarkable shift in corporate conviction is as yet unexplained, but we suspect it has a lot to do with the appearance on the Web over the last two years of a copious amount of intelligent material undermining the sanctity of the paradigm, now increasingly crippled by mainstream papers removing the pillars of evidence supporting it.

Barnesworld heats up

One blog which has mercilessly tweaked the noses of the poobahs of paradigm power who act as the priesthood preserving the HIV∫AIDS claim from media and scientific review is of course Barnesworld, now retitled ‘Hank’s “You Bet Your Life”‘, which is run by a West Coast lawyer under the pseudonym of Hank Barnes, who among other credits has mercilessly gone after John Moore of Cornell for his sins in misleading the public with his pretence that the scientific review of the HIV∫AIDS paradigm by its critics is not worth answering.

Recently the site has become more of a must read as it has expanded its offerings to include posts which are reprints of key material offered by the best HIV∫AIDS critics over the years, prepared by a new young partner, Otis, as well as original posts by the same elite group.

A couple of days ago a notable excerpt from science writer, editor and professor Harvey Bialy’s seminal book Oncogenes, Aneuploidy and AIDS: A Scientific Life and Times of Peter H. Duesberg, Harvey Bialy: “I Remember Maddox” detailed a similar backing down by Nature editor John Maddox from an adamant hostility to Peter Duesberg’s critique of HIV∫AIDS nonsense to an acknowledgement of its merit, and an opening of its pages to his latest critique, a surrender that unfortunately didn’t last very long (the volatile Bialy is pictured here with his peacable pet parrot Attila):

The years since 1995 have been much kinder to the points raised above, and that Peter and I elaborated in the remainder of the Genetica essay, than they have to David Ho and his fanciful notions of what constituted viral and cellular dynamics in an AIDS patient and how to measure them — ideas that have been thoroughly repudiated in the scientific literature. This is a fact of such common knowledge that stating it requires no reference. But as with so much else in AIDS there is an enormous disconnect between what is told to the media to tell to the public and what is really so as acknowledged now even in the best journals, like JAMA.

Although the waffle language is closer to what is found in difficult to negotiate UN resolutions than the prose expected of esteemed journals only a few short decades ago, the students in PH253 and the rest of the attentive audience will not miss the inescapable, and only proper scientific conclusion after 20+ years of assuming HIV was appropriately named*. And that conclusion is?

It’s not the virus. Our bad.

Another post this week republished part of science journalist and author (AIDS: The Failure of Contemporary Science, Fourth Estate, UK, 1996) Neville Hodgkinson’s review of how Uganda has failed to realize the dire predictions of AIDS doomsayers that 30 per cent of its population would be dead by now of AIDS. That is at Neville Hodgkinson on AIDS in Uganda.

Over the next 15 years, prestigious newspapers and magazines across the globe repeatedly published similar reports; the consensus was that a devastating proportion of the Ugandan population was doomed by Aids to premature death, with all the consequences on families and the society as a whole. Their predictions announced the practically inevitable collapse of the country in which the worldwide epidemic supposedly originated. The data seemed authoritative. By mid-1991, the World Health Organisation (WHO) was estimating that 1.5m Ugandans, nearly a tenth of the general population and a fifth of those sexually active, had the HIV infection. WHO predicted that in sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, child deaths in the 1990s could increase by as much as 30% because of Aids. In November 1996, the agency reported that more than three million children were already feeling the direct impact of Aids in Uganda alone.

Today the public prints and airwaves are still full about the African “Aids crisis”. But you will read little about Aids in Uganda. The reason: all prophecies have proved false, as the results of a 10-year census published last year has shown. Uganda’s population grew at an average annual rate of 3.4% between 1991 and 2002, one of the highest growth rates in the world, due to persistently high fertility levels (about seven children per woman) and a decline in infant and childhood mortality rates. Economic development has also shown constant growth over the same period reflecting the energy and determination of Ugandans to improve their living conditions. Fewer people are testing HIV-positive and nationally, the figure is now put at around 5%.

Further down is a replay of Peter Duesberg’s analysis of the same topic, Peter Duesberg on AIDS in Africa, presented to the South African AIDS Advisory Panel convened by President Thabo Mbeki in 2001, just before the Durban AIDS Conference.

Thus African AIDS is certainly not one of the historical microbial epidemics described by Camus and Anderson (see above). Since no immunity has emerged in over a decade the restriction of African AIDS to a relatively small fraction of the large reservoir of susceptible people indicates non-contagious risk factors that are limited to certain subsets of the African population. In view of the very small share (0.6%) that the African AIDS epidemic seems to hold on Africa’s total mortality, the question arises whether the mortality claimed for AIDS is in fact new and can be distinguished from conventional mortality, or whether it is a minor fraction of conventional mortality under a new name.

In its mix of new and old contributions by elite HIV∫AIDS critics, Barnesworld is now asserting itself as the leading group blog attacking the HIV∫AIDS paradigm on the Web.

  1. Dan Says:

Paul King of Dissident Action pointed out the less-than-certain language about HIV’s role in “AIDS” on the test inserts a couple of years ago. Ms. Culshaw is informing us that it may be a trend, moving toward language that is more vague and possibly immune (no pun intended) to future lawsuits.

Although, it seems they’ve already covered their asses somewhat. “Not to be used as performing assay”. “For informational purposes only”. “At present, there is no recognized standard for detecting the presence or absence of HIV antibodies”. “Not approved by FDA for diagnosis of HIV infection”. And so on…

Barnes-world has definitely cranked up the volume lately. Lots of good contributions and contributors. So successful is Barnes-world, that “sexy scientist” Tara Smith deems it important enough to fairly regularly start posts about things that have been said there, and here too, btw.

  2. Truthseeker Says:

In our opinion Rebecca even sexier than Tara, because she seems even brighter, thought this may be only because she is more focused, whereas Tara is dealing with much more material running her blog. But we are delighted by the concatenation of attractive appearance and intellect in both parties, though again Rebecca seems more an original or self sufficient thinker, whereas Tara seems more of a rationalizing conformist. Whatever, there is nothing more inspiring than the combination of physical attractiveness and intelligence, except that plus a good heart.

(Sorry, this comment was expanded after posting. – Ed.)

  3. noreen martin Says:

Barnes-world cetainly is heating up the kitchen so to speak, even though the comment section is far too closed. Nevertheless, it is still tragic that the patient is not told of the unreliable aspect of the HIV test or of its significance considering that a positive reaction will ruin the person’s life and could endanger the life of a fetus or child. What is this country coming too when we force mothers to take toxic drugs or risk legal repercussions or the taking away of the child for neglect. Does this sound like the home of the free or like some of the totalitarian governments around the world?

  4. Martin Kessler Says:

Has it occurred to the idiots in the CDC, who want to test everyone from 18 to 64 years of age, that the makers of the tests themselves are unsure of what the tests really mean? While the test kit makers are trying to immunize themselves from lawsuits, that may not insulate the CDC/Government from the same – because the wishy-washy wording on the test kits themselves may be exhibit 1 in a court of law.

  5. Frank Lusardi Says:

“Recently the site has become more of a must read…”

No doubt, but we miss Hank’s feisty irreverence, the cocksure humor that smoked John Moore out of his rathole. Where are you, Hank?

  6. nohivmeds Says:

Why do people always allude to Tara Smith’s and Rebecca Culshaw’s looks when discussing their writing/blogs? Seems kind of inappropriate, and I know from personal communication, that one of them does not appreciate it in the least. It’s so clearly a double standard. For example, no one comments on the fact that John Moore underwent an enormous weight loss over the last 5 years.

  7. Otis Says:

    Hey Frank,

Today’s front page at “the site” by the incomparable Marcel is nothing it not “feisty and irreverent”.

    It’s pretty damn funny too!

And Hank is around and about, but he is real busy with real big, big time lawyer type stuff now and can’t devote the time to “the site” that he once did.

That’s why he hired me (and I do not work cheap!).

  8. MacDonald Says:

    NHM

I think there were a few comments on John Moore’s looks in connection with the Toronto Fiasco.
Some even pretended to see a kind of self-loathing being acted out in his unspeakable experiments with new ways of torturing similarly inarticulate creatures.

But the weightloss is interesting. Do you think it’s drastic enough to get him diagnosed with AIDS in Uganda?

  9. MacDonald Says:

The Moore self-loathing hypothesis first suggested itself when this portrait was published:

    http://www.reviewingaids.com/awiki/
    index.php/Main_Page/Sandbox

  10. nohivmeds Says:

I think that what is most pernicious about what Culshaw has discovered is the difference in language between the test inserts ( suggests, strongly correlated, though to be caused ) and the standard line that the NY Times and all other media outlets use: HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

That’s a pretty big jump, and is clearly not based on science, but on misguided public health policy instead. Unfortunately, public health around AIDS has basically been a long litany of lies. Our government infantalizes the public with this policy — implying that we are not able to handle the truth regarding the lack of specificity of these tests. It’s a disgrace.

  11. Dan Says:

Why do people always allude to Tara Smith’s and Rebecca Culshaw’s looks when discussing their writing/blogs? Seems kind of inappropriate

I was poking a little fun at the doc. But I didn’t come up with this “sexy scientist” thing myself . She started a thread on her site about “sexy scientists”, and was quickly nominated for that honor by one of the posters. Anyway, the picture of her on her blog, wearing that – what is it? – tank top? tube top? sports bra?…with the mehndi necklace? choke chain?…isn’t exactly an image of restrained scientific dignity. Rrrroowwrr!

  12. nohivmeds Says:

Well, if Tara likes it, then so be it, but Rebecca does not, so we should respect that, I think, and restrict our comments about her to the brilliant machinations of her mind.

  13. Dave Says:

Compare the AIDS diagnosis to cancer diagnosis.

Think about it. You go into a hospital, because you feel pain in your chest.

First, they take an x-ray. It shows something, not right. A possible mass. Perhaps, they run some cytology tests on some cell cultures. Mebbe an MRI.

At some point, the oncologist will take a biopsy of the suspicious looking matter in your chest, causing pain, and thru some sophisticated use of electron microscopes and/or immunohistochemical staining, the doctors will confirm that:

You have cancer or you don’t have cancer.

In contrast, with HIV, they give you some vague indirect antibody tests. That’s it. With nary a symptom, with a buncha bogus viral load numbers based on RNA fragments, and barely an infectious virus, they tell you that your’re gonnna die from AIDS, unless you begin a life-long toxic regime.

It would be a joke, if it weren’t so sad.

  14. nohivmeds Says:

TS — your “expanded” comment on Rebecca’s looks just digs you in deeper. I know she’s requested that people focus on WHAT SHE IS SAYING, not how she looks. Certainly, you can privately admire the “packaging” can’t you? I’m afraid that in trying to fix what you had written earlier, your newer version only succeeds in being more demeaning to both women.

  15. nohivmeds Says:

Besides, isn’t it you who always insists that this blog is devoted to a discussion of science? Since when did a discussion of science include the ” sexiness ” of the discussants?

  16. noreen martin Says:

I have never understood why someone would be offended by others admiring one’s beauty, its part of the whole package, brains and all.

Dave, you are correct in your analogy concerning cancer. With cancer, there usually are symptoms, tests, x-rays or mri’s, biopsies and/or surgery. These are evaluated by the pathologist and there is 100% assurity that the patient has cancer. However, with AIDS, unlike cancer, the diagnosis is questionable and the treatments never stop. Can you image the doctor telling the patient that we think that you have cancer so we are going to given you radiaion and chemotherapy, just in case. The nut case doctor would lose his or her license. Why do they have a free rein with AIDS?

  17. BrianMelbourne Says:

One just can’t go past the significance of the watering down of the test kit language. It must be becoming apparent to them that the whole thing is likely to blow up in their faces at some point. (I’m not sure whether they would acknowledge this even privately amongst themselves, they might just feel they are being “prudent”).

Whatever, frankly, I hope that it ends up costing drug companies an enormous amount, simple because a significant commercial penalty has some chance of reforming the way they do business. Whether that’s a dream or not will come clear in the fulness of time!

  18. YossariansGhostbuster Says:

    Noreen, kindly review,

    August 2006, Barnes asks,

Noreen, At any point, did you develop full-blown AIDS?

Yes, I had full blown AIDS several months prior to my HIV diagnosis. When the diagnosis was made in December of ‘03, the oncology department apparently missed the fact that I had full- blown AIDS. I had in fact several of the AIDS, defining diseases and my CD4 count were at 78. I attribute my bad health to a number of factors to include, past medical history/treatments, legal drugs, stress, health habits and specifically to the non-treatment of anemia, low platelets, abnormal blood problems and memory problems. Prior to developing AIDS and unbeknown to me, I had consecutive years of abnormal, blood results.

August 29, 2006 another person asks,

Noreen, “Would you say that given the choice you would never have taken the ARV’s in the earlier days ? And that none of them were of benefit ?

Noreen: “ No, but every case is different and I was dying. I do not believe that anyone should be placed on anti-virals just for HIV, an unproven virus. However, if someone is diagnosed with Aids and has other viruses going on, then this is a horse of a different color. “

  19. Robert Houston Says:

“One just can’t go past the significance of the watering down of the test kit language.” –Brian Melbourne

It’s not just the language that’s been watered down. According to Robert Giraldo, M.D., who has often performed the HIV tests in the clinical laboratories of a prestigious hospital, the Elisa test requires diluting the serum sample to an unusually high degree (400:1). Otherwise, everyone would test positive! See his published article on this at RobertoGiraldo.com.

The Perth group has also critiqued the HIV tests and has pointed out that it has long been known that normal body cells (especially in the placenta) can produce endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), and that HIV-uninfected persons can develop antibodies to the ERV surface antigens, which include the “specific” HIV proteins p18, p24, and gp120. This would be one of the possible reasons for false-positive crossreactions on an HIV test and for the higher rates of positive results in pregnant women.

By the way, it is an objective fact of reality that Rebecca Culshaw and Tara Smith are very attractive women. This is not just the personal opinions of TS or myself. It’s a truth that remains valid regardless of the objections of NHM or the ladies themselves. As TS expressed it so well, the keen independent insight of Rebecca Culshaw enhances her appeal. In fact, it elevates her to the legendary level of Hypatia, the first woman mathematician – or even Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Regardless of how much the political correctors may squawk, TS does not need to apologize, nor to be scolded, for recognizing the greatness of this woman.

  20. objukwu Says:

Is it the threat of lawsuits that has caused the diminished language on these test kits(as suggestd above by Martin Kessler? That was the first thing that occurred to me , but is there ….a law review article …or something, anything in the legal literature… to back that up? Any major case on LexisNexis might also be loaded with info if someone has access to it.

For that matter, what do the manufacturer’s themselves have to say about why they’ve gone wobbly on this? Anyone

who hasn’t as yet totally alienated her might give Marilyn Chase of the Wall Street Journal a ring up. Marilyn knows pretty much everything there is to know about HIV, with specific expertise in the area of its lethality. But she hasn’t been answering my phone calls of late.

And Yo, if “Rebecca” doesn’t want people commenting on her looks, why the picture?

  21. pat Says:

    …anticipating noreen’s answer to yassarian.

To my brother lawyer the toned-down language of the packaging is nothing but lawyer talk to cover one’s ass ahead of time. My question is: why are they covering their asses when they have government endorsement of HIV? It wasen’t the pharma that invented HIV but the US government… a convenient lightning rod.

  22. Dan Says:

    Pat:

Even though a pharma company may follow government instructions to the letter, a judge and a jury can punch right through that if they are so inclined. I know it doesn’t seem right; but witness the different verdicts in the recent Vioxx cases. (I think about six or seven are finished at trial – in different states, and Merck has lost as many as they have won). But I imagine, and your brother may be able to comment on this, that the more protective language they have printed on their packages the better.

But like you say, WHY? WHAT , exactly, do they know and whenwhydidtheyknowit, and why aren’t they telling the rest of us(via the media) what it is they knew when they knew it?

  24. Truthseeker Says:

NHM should know that the emendation to our previous post was not in response to PC inanity but in the interests of accuracy and full understanding, which are the twin aspirations of this humble blog.

As to the stated objections, surely it is the PC brigade who disrespect these women, in fact.

No redblooded heterosexual or even gay who is not blind could avoid paying kneeling tribute to the beauty of these two ravishing representatives of the finest in American womanhood, except for the PC contingent.

Certainly the contemporary PC extension of US puritanism which informs its conformists that in some way this explicit admiration involves a blindness to these charmers’ other sterling qualities as human beings and accomplished professionals is not ever going to have the slightest influence here, especially since when you think about it, it involves a denial of the very equality they think they are standing up for by deploring it.

For this equality is what women have already deservedly achieved and is exactly what allows one to make such comments freely without implying we are viewing them as witless sex objects or good for only being housebound and bare foot and pregnant, or any disrespect or diminution of that or any kind.

Emancipated women in New York as we experience them have long won the right to be distinguished in any career or role in life and be freely admired for their beauty without any PC objections which as we say only imply the very disrespect the PC brigade think they object to.

This includes even the objections of the woman herself which NHM reports, though she is not disrespecting herself because her objections can only reflect the retarded environment she lives in, which is evidently corrupted by such thinking otherwise she would know, as every woman in every other civilized country knows, that tribute to her beauty has to be paid as proper expression of the admiration she by nature demands and deserves on this front, and it is entirely apolitical .

Anyone who doesn’t understand this probably needs to visit England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece, Poland etc. and get with the program of civilized social life beyond the baby steps of the PC brigade in this country, which hasn’t yet even caught up with the extent of the American sexual revolution, at least in the big cities of the East Coast.

Here women are so well appreciated for their capacities that we have now produced a viable candidate for the Presidency of the United States, who by the way if she makes enough personal appearances we believe is going to win quite a few votes for her own attractions, which we can assure you from recent experience watching her in action from twelve feet away are definitely as high on the cute meter as they ever were.

Perhaps a gay man might not understand this but civilized and intelligent heterosexual men who see and appreciate divinely formed females automatically are influenced by nature into immediately granting them superior qualities of every kind, which is the root cause of the marital problems of the huge numbers who rush into civil union before the effect wears off.

Presumably exactly the same effect is felt by gays in love but luckily till recently they were saved from rushing into marriage under its influence. Of course this is changing and presumably they will end up in the same boat, as vividly portrayed by Edward Albee in Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf, which was in fact apparent to discerning observers an account drawn from gay life, since it was missing some heterosexual elements.

We wait for NHM to come charging out at the last remark as predictably as he came charging out to challenge the PC correctness of our comments on the heavenly duo, apparently unaware that the PC incorrectness of it was a premise of the comments, a subtextual sauce already appreciated by all as something which lent the observations a piquancy without which they would have been mundane.

However, as with radiation which I have had and can relate to the nasty side effects, it would not be wise for me to continue on the HAART regiment indefinetely.

    I don’t know about a kneeling tribute…

But I do tire of the PC police and their subdivision, the language police.

Political correctness is something that I look forward to being dead and buried, as it’s nothing more than a type of bondage that keeps us from expressing ourselves.

Truthseeker, there’s nothing wrong with you expressing your appreciation of these women’s many attractive qualities. What’s unfortunate is that it should even be an issue at all.

  28. Truthseeker Says:

Sorry, Dan, we hugely appreciate the support of a mature and socially sophisticated observer against what will no doubt be a storm of PC disapproval but overnight we have come to our senses and realized that to publicly acknowledge a woman’s attractive qualities of any kind is a horrific insult for which we can only grovel in apology, since it involves her personal life which is none of our business, and demeans her as someone we don’t respect enough as a professional and a human being not to drag her through the mud in this way, and in an example of our male arrogance and contempt for women as a species which is intensely embarrassing to have paraded so blatantly.

We can only plead that the peculiar vacuum into which one writes as a commenter on the Web tends to suck out of one all kinds of thoughts and emotions which should stay hidden, as some commenters on this blog have also demonstrated, so at least we have company in our failing.

We were not even drinking aquavit. Maybe we should.

  29. Dan Says:

I’ll have to disagree with your epiphany, Truthseeker.

I found what you wrote about these two women to be reminiscent of lessons I learned from my father when I was young.

These observations hardly come from a place of male arrogance, rather they come from a place of awe, respect, honor and reverence for beauty in its many manifestations. The PC police are intent on dragging it out of us and beating it to death. What purpose this serves other than robbing all of us of such simple, enjoyable, life-affirming expressions, I don’t know. Maybe the PC police want everybody else to be as dead inside as they are.

Sorry, got to run. Here comes NHM in the PC squad car!

Well, Chris is trimming the hedges and doesn’t want to talk about zeroes and is all hung up on something about predictions so I’ll come over here —where–right up front–I’ll confess to not knowing what the rules are—and so I’ve got to ask —what in the name of all that is microbial and virionic and holy–does any of this have to do with fish oil?

Or am I on the wrong thread again/….., what the hell…This Athena thing, it has to be addressed.

What is with this “…elevated to the legendary level of Athena…goddess of wisdom…”???

    Jesus. Come again???

What are you , some kind of public relations advertising agent, you want to get this girl’s picture on some fish oil you’re peddling?(what’s it going to be called , ‘Athenoic Acid’? or maybe a ‘Rebeccadisiac’?) I mean, I’ve witnessed obsequious…but, Good God man, if you need business that bad, go stand out front of the building with a cup or something.

As far as Athena being the goddess of wisdom, maybe. But her wisdom was only in so far as it pertained to the art of war. That is , unless you believe all this back of a ceral box miscontruifiable honey monster nonsense , which is also found in the wiki, about her being peace loving and sensitive and all that(even though she is pictured always with the helmet and the shield)which had to’ve been put there by a disingenous buffoon.

Athena was the warrior goddess, the goddess of terror and heavenly fire, the battle scarred deity who did not suffer fools lightly, -she killed them- She was Ishtar, the warriorette with the merciless blank eyed marble stare who could make the earth tremble and scare up the dead. This is the broad who killed her own playmate(she said it was an “accident”)and who cut off Zeus’s head with an assegai(no accident-this she did on purpose–Zeus, who was able to pick up his head and put it back on again-no harm , no foul- avoided her after that). This was Typhon, fearless and horrible.
You think Halley Laser Berry-X has got a bad-ass stare? think she can whip up a mean storm?
    Nuthin’, bro.
Athena could freeze everybody solid with a single look, and blow the earth right out of its orbit with a single breath.

Here’s what people really had to say about her:
“She …who is clothed in fire…and destroys…all in her path” (Pliny)

“She is Astarte…Astarte who destroys… who has horns of fire growing from her head” (Herodotus)

And finally , Athena has a few word about herself:
    “I am Ishstar,
Queen undisputed of heaven and earth,
    The THOUGHT of my name
    makes heaven and earth shake,
and the spirits of the earth falter”
From Bill Clinton, “Reflections of an Honest Man” unpubl.

    Hell, Fire, Brimstone.

Now I ask you, dude, is there anything in the picture up above,(which am safely assuming to be that of the girl in question), ….does it look like that broad is on fire to you? She make you tremble,– of fear , I mean?
If so , take another look .
You got a willow tree standing there with an expression her face like the mother in law has just rolled up in the driveway and announced she’s going to be staying for a coupl’ve weeks.
No offense or nuthin ,(And again, if you don’t wan’t comments about it, then why the picture?) but I don’t think she’s going to be taking on Xena the Warrior Princess in an ultimate fighting match anytime soon.

So what’s really in your fish oil–if it’s brain food then you need to pick a different goddess.

    Just correcting the record

    Have a nice day

It could almost be continued to the ankles as an evening gown. It has elegant style without being flashy, it somehow creates a sense of mystery and intrigue, of limitless possibilities of endless mathematical fugues. See, that’s how you do it guys.

Idolaters of the infinite facets, of all the female form, fly you so high on your waxen wing’s fancy, for all the world to scorn, your idol’s attractions meet, bathed in the shade beneath?

Lise, that is a very fine sounding post, but what do the last two lines mean?

Contrary to NHM’s claims that “R. Culshaw” is put out, the blog has not received any complaints from her regarding the “way she is treated on this blog”. However, we do agree as we have said that it is an absolute disgrace that anyone should have had the disrespect to admire her charms other than her keen mind and use of same, plus her independent and courageous spirit, and we hereby apologize to her for these insults.

On careful reflection we now accept that it is quite wrong for any person even a personal friend of RC to comment in public on her physical appearance other than admiring her clothes sense, as rightly pointed out above by the anonymous one.

We also believe it is wrong for RH to rate her rival in this regard, Tara Smith, as anything less than the 10 that all have (quite disgracefully) awarded RC. No woman should ever be rated as anything less than a 10 in public and it is ungentlemanly to do so in our opinion, although we recognize of course that RH was doing so in this case only as a humorous twist on the fact they are both mathematicians and not on the basis of their physical charms, but on their perceived sharpness and independence of mind, though we are not entirely sure that that is permitted a gentleman either, although RH will know better than we do about that.

On the whole we stand with NHM and deplore any personal comment on any woman in public or indeed any response at all other than to reply to the points she makes on the intellectual level. Women must be treated as if their attractions did not exist, because these are none of our business if we do not know them personally.

Another reason is that thoughtless people tend to grant good looking people more savvy than others, and that is the kind of prejudice which must be stamped out in the search for truth and justice. In the case of women also we are informed by one wiser than ourselves that there is a rule that “pretty girls make their own rules” and this of course undermines the entire enterprise, as those that love them know all too well.

Okay, TS, back to talking about finding tiny, print on lab blurb sheets, may we advance to ask:

    Otis,

Will you kindly respond to a few questions ?

If Barnes is, “real busy with real big, big time lawyer type stuff now and can’t devote the time to “the site” that he once did”, how is it he finds time to post here under his new name, Dave ? Okay, never find, not important.

And, Otis, why are you so chicken in closing comments at Barnes World all the time ?

Otis, your most recent entry, Jeffrey Dach, MD is interesting but he sounds too much like a sock puppet cloning someone else. Like he was really an interventional radiologist (?) twenty-five years wow, but he wasn’t tuned into AIDS until the past few months so he finally read books by Farber, Bialy and Lauritson, then emailed Dr. Duesberg for more information.

Now he is an expert on Bennett, already when he says,

“This absurdity revealed the lie behind the credentials, as clearly the man knows nothing about linear regression analysis.” But Dach does he know about hair growth, right ?

We now fast forward to Dr. Dach, his currently offering Seminars on Human Growth Hormone (which needs to be taken long-term on a continuing basis) and promises to improve the following:

    “Attitude Toward Life 78%
    Back Flexibility 83%
    Body Fat Loss 72%
    Emotional Stability 67%
    Exercise Tolerance 81%
    Hot Flashes 58%
    Healing Capacity 71%
    Healing of Other Injuries 61%
    Sexual Function, Sexual Potency/Frequency 75%
Strength, Exercise &Body Fat, Muscle Strength 88%
    Muscle Size 81%
    Menstrual Cycle Regulation 39%
Skin &Hair Care, Skin Texture 71%
    Skin Thickness 68%
    Skin Elasticity 71%
    Wrinkle Disappearance 61%
    New Hair Growth 38%
Energy, Emotions &Memory, Energy Level 84%
    Memory 62%
    Resistance to Common Illness 73%”

    New hair growth 38 % ?, Wrinkle disappearance 61 % Muscle size increase 81 % Emotions 84 %

Otis, any peer-reviewed articles to support that baloney stuff ?

Otis or Dave, Will somebody please pass the omega-3 fish oil.

Oops, I forgot, recommended reading by Dr. Dach is that great scientist, Suzanne Summers and her book, The Sexy Years.

Otis, my favorite is the 73 % improvement in Common Illness.

And actually, the omega fish oil is one of the best cancer preventors going. Plus you have to admit that Suaznne Sommers looks pretty good, how do you look?

  42. DCB Says:

    TS,

“No redblooded heterosexual or even gay who is not blind could avoid paying kneeling tribute to the beauty of these two ravishing representatives of the finest in American womanhood, except for the PC contingent.”

Rebecca is CANADIAN, not “American”. She has lived in the US for the past 4 years.

“Certainly the contemporary PC extension of US puritanism which informs its conformists that in some way this explicit admiration involves a blindness to these charmers’ other sterling qualities as human beings and accomplished professionals is not ever going to have the slightest influence here, especially since when you think about it, it involves a denial of the very equality they think they are standing up for by deploring it.”

TS, you don’t even KNOW Rebecca. I know her 1,000 times better than ANYONE posting here or anywhere else for that matter. It really gets me how all of you are going on making all these claims and judgments about what/how she thinks, feels, etc. Half of you have never even spoken to her, let alone have any basis for knowing what/how she thinks, feels, etc. It’s pathetic.

“This includes even the objections of the woman herself which NHM reports, though she is not disrespecting herself because her objections can only reflect the retarded environment she lives in, which is evidently corrupted by such thinking otherwise she would know, as every woman in every other civilized country knows, that tribute to her beauty has to be paid as proper expression of the admiration she by nature demands and deserves on this front, and it is entirely apolitical.

TS, you do not know the NATURE of Rebecca’s objections, and you know even less, if anything, about her personally.

And for your information, Rebecca was born in Africa, lived most of her life in Ontario and Halifax, spent a year living in London, and has travelled to various parts of the world. She is not some sheltered American who has never been exposed to the rest of the “civilized” world.

“No woman should ever be rated as anything less than a 10 in public and it is ungentlemanly to do so in our opinion.”

Hmmm…what about all the times a woman is *NOT* given a “rating” at all…isn’t that “less than 10”? I doubt you would give this woman

    http://www.grimmemennesker.dk/ugly-people-117.htm

a rating if you had an equivalent opportunity to opine on her physical attributes in public. Don’t you think that the very omission of ever being given a rating might strike a woman as a “rating” in and of itself?

My point is not to argue that physical attractiveness should be dismissed, ignored, or pretended not to exist. My point is that you wish to extol beauty, but then you say “no woman should ever be rated as anything less than a 10”. But this is impossible, as anyone with less than stellar features (male or female) knows from their own experiences. People are judged and classified and ranked in all sorts of categories. It’s just part of life. Everyone knows that everyone else is going around numerically ranking people’s looks (and other things). To pretend that simply “withholding” all rankings less than 10, that somehow those not receiving a 10 ranking aren’t aware they didn’t “make the grade” is ludicrous.

“Come on fellas, does ANY one doubt for a second that the ONLY reason she is the queen of the cable TV is that no man (and probably plenty of women too) can keep their eyes off her and must secretely be thinking of all the things delicious they could do to and for one another if only given the chance and that this is what goes through the colective “head” while her gorgeous, almost unearthly, visage speaks uttter and often vicious trash?

    I think not.”

Gee, for a second I thought you were secretly talking about someone else… 😉

“These observations hardly come from a place of male arrogance, rather they come from a place of awe, respect, honor and reverence for beauty in its many manifestations. The PC police are intent on dragging it out of us and beating it to death. What purpose this serves other than robbing all of us of such simple, enjoyable, life-affirming expressions, I don’t know. Maybe the PC police want everybody else to be as dead inside as they are.”

I don’t think anyone (Rebecca least of all, who is anything but PC, if any of you actually KNEW her) wishes to expunge acknowledgement of beauty from all discourse, public or private. I do think she’s a bit puzzled and upset, however, that this relative non-issue has taken up more space on this thread and others than the reason she appears here in the first place. This is a blog about HIV and AIDS, no?

“Now I ask you, dude, is there anything in the picture up above, (which am safely assuming to be that of the girl in question), ….does it look like that broad is on fire to you? She make you tremble,— of fear , I mean? If so, take another look. You got a willow tree standing there with an expression her face like the mother in law has just rolled up in the driveway and announced she’s going to be staying for a coupl’ve weeks.”

Appearances can be deceiving. You know nothing of fire and nothing of her, and even less of their relation to each other. If you think what she is saying and doing, the shit she has had to put up with, takes anything less than fire inside, then you should try it yourself.

“Contrary to NHM’s claims that ‘R. Culshaw’ is put out, the blog has not received any complaints from her regarding the ‘way she is treated on this blog’.”

And of course, you would be the FIRST person she would reveal these complaints to, no?

“However, we do agree as we have said that it is an absolute disgrace that anyone should have had the disrespect to admire her charms other than her keen mind and use of same, plus her independent and courageous spirit, and we hereby apologize to her for these insults.”

Again, I don’t think she’s insulted by someone pointing out she’s attractive. (Again, if you actually KNEW her, you would know this.) I think she’s insulted by how much this relative non-issue has completely distracted from other more important topics which are the primary reasons she is mentioned here in the first place.

“On the whole we stand with NHM and deplore any personal comment on any woman in public or indeed any response at all other than to reply to the points she makes on the intellectual level. Women must be treated as if their attractions did not exist, because these are none of our business if we do not know them personally.”

Oh, come on, TS. There’s a difference between acknowledging that someone’s attractive or even complimenting someone on it, and not being able to write for 2 seconds about someone (this is not the first time) without fawning on and on about how much a goddess they are or saying more about how impressed one is with someone’s unending beauty than about anything they’ve ever said.

Also, Darin, you seem to have overlooked the fact that at the top of every page of this blog is the motto “All statements accurate except where irony intended.”

Even so, your comments are anyway misplaced because we never said anything at all about what Rebecca, the goddess before whom you rightly kneel so often, actually thought. In fact, we pointed out that she had said absolutely nothing to us of any kind on this topic, and by the way we have already guessed that she is not particularly PC herself, not because we are familiar with her journey through Africa etc but because it is a basic principle without exception that no attractive female human being has ever been known to object to a compliment in the history of the human race, except as a pretence, however otherwise irrational that 48% of the human race might be.

  46. DCB Says:

“Also, Darin, you seem to have overlooked the fact that at the top of every page of this blog is the motto ‘All statements accurate except where irony intended.'”

Except I can never tell with you.

“Even so, your comments are anyway misplaced because we never said anything at all about what Rebecca, the goddess before whom you rightly kneel so often, actually thought.”

    Excuse me?

First of all, where do you get off telling ME that *I* “rightly kneel so often before [Rebecca]”?? I was simply defending her as a friend. Or are you privy to some aspect of our friendship that neither of us is aware of ourselves??

I would watch my choice of words more closely if I were you. If you know what I mean.

“This includes even the objections of the woman herself which NHM reports, though she is not disrespecting herself because her objections can only reflect the retarded environment she lives in, which is evidently corrupted by such thinking”

You are implying that her THOUGHTS (objections) are a reflection of her “retarded environment she lives in”. So you DID say something about what she thinks.

“Anyone who doesn’t understand this probably needs to visit England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece, Poland etc. and get with the program of civilized social life beyond the baby steps of the PC brigade in this country, which hasn’t yet even caught up with the extent of the American sexual revolution, at least in the big cities of the East Coast.”

Again, implying that her THOUGHTS are a reflection of some sheltered existence which has constricted her to the “baby steps of the PC brigade”. So you DID say something about what she thinks.

Or were you talking about someone else?

“Perhaps a gay man might not understand this but civilized and intelligent heterosexual men who see and appreciate divinely formed females automatically are influenced by nature into immediately granting them superior qualities of every kind,”

Obviously, as you’ve made an example of yourself. You’re so blinded by Tara’s good looks you can’t even tell she no intelligence whatsoever for Rebecca to compete with. I think this was what Bialyzebub was secretly getting at.

“And Yo, if ‘Rebecca’ doesn’t want people commenting on her looks, why the picture?”

“No offense or nuthin ,(And again, if you don’t wan’t comments about it, then why the picture?)”

The picture was put up by TS without Rebecca’s explicit permission. In order words, she did not “put the picture up”. It was originally the picture on her academic website for roughly a year, but has since been replaced.

Again, I don’t think she is offended by people “commenting on her looks”. I think she is offended that such comments have repeatedly appeared whenever her name is mentioned at this blog and seem to morph into open-ended soliloquies which seem to eclipse whatever substantive points she had raised in the first place.

“although we recognize of course that RH was doing so in this case only as a humorous twist on the fact they are both mathematicians and not on the basis of their physical charms”

HELLO?? Tara is not a mathematician. She wouldn’t know a Hausdorff space from outer space.

I believe Dr. Brown made a number of excellent and pertinent comments. Contrary to the odd remark by “YosariansGhostbuster”, i.e. McKiernan, they were posted at the correct thread concerning Dr. Culshaw. I’m aware that Dr. Brown is a friend and colleague of Dr. Culshaw, and that his remarks are probably a good representation of her views. Although I’m a culprit in all this, I find Dr. Brown’s statement convincing and concede that he’s correct.

TS, the ratings I submitted were in regard to standard quality assessments and did not concern math prowess. Tara was downrated due to her annoying opinions. Granted, this is all rather juvenile.

A more significant matter is a point Dr. Culshaw raised in her article about HIV testing. She pointed out that “pregnancy is documented in the medical literature as a source of false positives on the HIV antibody tests.” It’s interesting to note that there are several studies concerning the crossreactivity of antibodies to HIV with proteins produced by endogenous retroviruses, which are generated in the placentas of pregnant females. This has been reported as early as 1991 and 1995 in humans (1, 2), as well as in primates (3).

And JP Moore still has the gall to claim at the “HIV responsible journalism” seminar that

“So they argue that TB, malaria, leprosy, pregnancy cause false positive tests in an HIV assay. Now this is simply not true of the modern tests, and it’s questionable how significant it was with the early generation of assays.”

First of all, what “modern tests”? Have ELISA and WB changed at all in 20 years?? PCR is not a diagnostic test at all, so he can’t be referring to THAT.

  49. Truthseeker Says:

Darin, we can’t possibly speak to the points made by the distinguished founder and author of the AIDS Wikepedia without trembling with awe and nervous admiration but here goes:

Except I can never tell [irony] with you.

Apparently not judging from all this! (By the way, most of the points were actually directed at NHM, not RC).

First of all, where do you get off telling ME that *I* “rightly kneel so often before [Rebecca]”?? etc etc (threat of violence implied)

    Ditto.

By the way we disapprove as much as you do of all this discussion of what distinguished and courageous mathematician and author to be (of what will undoubtedly be a very sharp book) Rebecca Culshaw thinks about something that she has said she doesn’t wish to be discussed. We are surprised in fact that given your long acquaintance with her views on the topic that you should have made the longest post on the topic of all.

You are implying that her THOUGHTS (objections) are a reflection of her “retarded environment she lives in”. So you DID say something about what she thinks. ?

No, we relied on what NHM had reported she told him about her objection.

You’re so blinded by Tara’s good looks you can’t even tell she has no intelligence whatsoever for Rebecca to compete with. I think this was what Bialyzebub was secretly getting at.

Ditto previous ditto. However, we stick to our point that it is very ungentlemanly to insult a woman’s intelligence in public, especially a pretty one, and we would never do it. That is why we have never posted a post we wrote on the dangers of witless blogging. (Ditto)

HELLO?? Tara is not a mathematician. She wouldn’t know a Hausdorff space from outer space.

You’ll have to take that up with Houston, who now says

TS, the ratings I submitted were in regard to standard quality assessments and did not concern math prowess.

but who informed me earlier that he was rating them both as a humorous riff on them both being “mathematicans” of a kind. Tara is an epidemiologist and has some acquaintance with statistics we believe, so there is something to it, though we agree with you about the relative expertise involved.

If you will allow us we now sign off with a salute to your chivalry in defending your friend against what you and she think is the diversion of discussion in the wrong direction away from the point she was making, though we remind you that this blog was merely posting a notice of what she said on another blog, and our post made her point pretty clear, we thought.

You may have to take into account that this blog cannot go on being earnest 100% of the time.

However, we stick to our point that it is very ungentlemanly to insult a woman’s intelligence in public, especially a pretty one,

Truthseeker, I couldn’t agree more. A pretty girl has so wretchedly little, we must be especially careful not to rob her of what she doesn’t possess, whereas those lucky ugly girls are not in the same desperate need of inner qualities to balance outer ones. In fact, it’d just make them all lob-sided and thus add a dimension of assymetry to mere physical unattractiveness.
If we must award, then, let’s award in equal measure. Intelligence and prettiness ought never be separated, since that would equal the cruelty of shoeing the left foot with high heel but leaving the right naked as the object of our praise ambles through life the best she can.

The meaning of Lise’s poem seems to me equally clear. Idolizing a woman with your words, while by your action you deliver her photographic representation (idol) placed entirely in the shade, indeed amounts to ‘scorn’. Adding insult to injury is the fact that a bright sunny spot is clearly discernible only a couple of steps however ambling from the darkness in which the photographer saw fit to place her. Tell me, would that ever have happened to Tara or Michelle?

Finally, it is a sad day we have to add McKiernan (if it is really he incarnated in the proverbial ghostbuster, and considering his random ravings I have no reason to doubt it) to the pharma funded rogue’s gallery recently posted by Otis on Hank’s blog. That day, however, may have dawned.

  51. Truthseeker Says:

Just to make a point of how PC gets out of control, here is a quote from Andrea Dworkin:

Heterosexual intercourse is the pure, formalized expression of contempt for women’s bodies.

Talk about contempt for the capacity for women to enjoy heterosexual sex!

    You wish, Andrea!

  52. Truthseeker Says:

If we must award, then, let’s award in equal measure. Intelligence and prettiness ought never be separated

You mistake us, McD. We meant that a pretty girl is always intelligent in our experience. But then, we live in New York City, where all the girls are pretty, and all the men are smart, but are outmarted by the pretty girls.

The photo as the distinguished founder of the AIDS Wiki has noted is not ours but was Culshaw’s, so the sun and shadow is not our design. We were not even admiring it for its “sexiness”, but for revealed personal qualities on a higher plane, involving delicacy, sensitivity, intelligence etc., ie poetic and not carnal, which latter is none of our business, since we do not know her, as DB pointed out rather belligerently, rejecting our idea of him kneeling before her beauty, saying “I would watch my choice of words more closely if I were you. If you know what I mean” (we don’t).

Finally, it is a sad day we have to add McKiernan (if it is really he incarnated in the proverbial ghostbuster, and considering his random ravings I have no reason to doubt it) to the pharma funded rogue’s gallery recently posted by Otis on Hank’s blog.

What does this mean? Is McK busted as a pharmagoon? Surely not. If so, perhaps he changed his moniker here to allow him to escape the leash.

  53. Otis Says:

It is only 1:30 in the morning where I live and before I retire for the night, let me add a little west coast spice to the wild and crazy mix you got going here TS.

“You may have to take into account that this blog cannot go on being earnest 100% of the time.”

You can paste that again (and again).

In case anyone was wondering why McK/Yossarian’s busted ghost and the ex-Catch-22 too did not write me himself asking all those give away questions, the answer is quite simply that Hank and I banned his IP some time ago, and he is not determined enough to go to another computer for a one time, short lived post.

I do understand why you put up with him however TS, since compared to some of the others you continue to allow their “freedoms of expression”, he is harmless, and once in a while good for a head scratching moment or two of bemusement.

However, he is definitely not a pharmagoon, and is also not even a mini-minor spokesperson for AIDS, Inc. like Daf9/Dale or Pharma Bawd, although one wishes he was. Maybe you could <i>award</i> *him* an honorary degree …like The Moore Chair at Goon U. and he could set up his own website called AIDSandEverything_Else _Under_the_Sun_including_the_sheep?

  54. Otis Says:

Oppps..that’s 12:30 not 1:30 (or it was 30 mins ago …”what time is it now?”.

And maybe sheep should be cow path?

  55. MacDonald Says:

    TS,

It means Robert Houston identified YGB with McK, and YGB, instead of his usual randomness, has chosen in his last posts, irrespective of relevance to anything else in this thread, to chime in with the concerted attack on Dr. Dach started by Nick Bennett, reaching Hank’s via Pharma Bawd, and now NAR in form of the unwontedly purposeful smear exhibited just a couple of posts up.

Were I the editor, I would have defied all Ms. Culshaw’s wishes, express or not, and exercised my own superior judgment in posting a photo that does not expose her to the risk of being likened to a petrified willow by distinguished Nigerian posters.

But I’m not, and perhaps I merely put my own mistaken interpretation on Lise’s fine poem.
