Three more have requested that their names be removed. Two are women who declined to explain why they apparently have changed their minds, and one was a man who was fairly sure that Duesberg was right but felt it was politick to take his name off. That is three names in the past year.

Free speech on the Web

As of Aug 17 2009, only one signatory has contacted us to remove his name from the list. He explained:

the main reason why I started to withdraw my name is Google.
People who try to get some information about me use it. E.g. when I compete for a vacancy the company probably will do so. They would be alarmed by the words "HIV/AIDS", because they don't see the context. When I joined the doubters list on www.rethinkingaids.com I did not foresee this problem. Furthermore as a technician I do not have enough competence to stand for a certain opinion on it. That's my view today.

The paradox and tragedy of the Web is that while it promised to release a Niagara of free speech, and did so at first, now, Alas, the tide has turned, and many have thought better of the frankness with which they first expressed themselves. Instead, they wisely seek to avoid the misunderstanding and antagonism of the foolish and the ignorant by not speaking out, even on important matters of public policy.

As the author of "Oncogenes, Aneuploidy and AIDS: A Scientifc Life and Times of Peter Duesberg" may i please inquire of you good sir where exactly i might find the (see review in earlier post). As the founding scientific editor of Nature Biotechnology, and a leading member of the list whose precise scientific intelligence is another example of how dissidents include several thinkers who outshine any of their opponents, i think i am entitled to read it.
