Truth, beauty and paradigm power in science and society

I am Nicolaus Copernicus, and I approve of this blog

News, views and reviews measured against professional literature in peer reviewed journals (adjusted for design flaws and bias), well researched books, authoritative encyclopedias (not the bowdlerized Wiki entries on controversial topics) and the investigative reporting and skeptical studies of courageous original thinkers among academics, philosophers, researchers, scholars, authors, filmmakers and journalists.

Supporting the right of exceptional minds to free speech, publication, media coverage and funding against the crowd prejudice, leadership resistance, monetary influences and internal professional politics of the paradigm wars of cancer, HIV(not)AIDS, evolution, global warming, cosmology, particle physics, macroeconomics, information technology, religions and cults, health, medicine, diet and nutrition.

I am Albert Einstein, and I heartily approve of this blog, insofar as it seems to believe both in science and the importance of intellectual imagination, uncompromised by out of date emotions such as the impulse toward conventional religious beliefs, national aggression as a part of patriotism, and so on. As I once remarked, the further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge. Certainly the application of the impulse toward blind faith in science whereby authority is treated as some kind of church is to be deplored. As I have also said, the only thing that ever interfered with my learning was my education. I am Freeman Dyson, and I approve of this blog, but would warn the author that life as a heretic is a hard one, since the ignorant and the half informed, let alone those who should know better, will automatically trash their betters who try to enlighten them with independent thinking, as I have found to my sorrow in commenting on "global warming" and its cures.
Many people would die rather than think – in fact, they do so. – Bertrand Russell.

The progress of science is strewn, like an ancient desert trail, with the bleached skeletons of discarded theories which once seemed to possess eternal life. - Arthur Koestler

One should as a rule respect public opinion in so far as is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison. – Bertrand Russell

Fraud and falsehood only dread examination. Truth invites it. - Samuel Johnson

A sudden bold and unexpected question doth many times surprise a man and lay him open. – Sir Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626)

He who knows only his own side of the case, knows little of that. – John Stuart Mill

Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time to reform. – Mark Twain

Although science has led to the generally high living standards that most of the industrialized world enjoys today, the astounding discoveries underpinning them were made by a tiny number of courageous, out-of-step, visionary, determined, and passionate scientists working to their own agenda and radically challenging the status quo. – Donald W. Braben

An old error is always more popular than a new truth. — German Proverb

I am Richard Feynman and I approve of this blog

When even the brightest mind in our world has been trained up from childhood in a superstition of any kind, it will never be possible for that mind, in its maturity, to examine sincerely, dispassionately, and conscientiously any evidence or any circumstance which shall seem to cast a doubt upon the validity of that superstition. I doubt if I could do it myself. – Mark Twain

It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his income depends on his not understanding it. – Upton Sinclair

A clash of doctrines is not a disaster, but an opportunity. - Alfred North Whitehead

Fraud and falsehood only dread examination. Truth invites it. – Samuel Johnson

Man’s mind cannot grasp the causes of events in their completeness, but the desire to find those causes is implanted in man’s soul. And without considering the multiplicity and complexity of the conditions any one of which taken separately may seem to be the cause, he snatches at the first approximation to a cause that seems to him intelligible and says: “This is the cause!” – Leo Tolstoy

The evolution of the world tends to show the absolute importance of the category of the individual apart from the crowd. - Soren Kierkegaard

Who does not know the truth is simply a fool, yet who knows the truth and calls it a lie is a criminal. – Bertold Brecht

How easily the learned give up the evidence of their senses to preserve the coherence of ideas in their imagination. – Adam Smith

Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned. – Mark Twain

The mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein and resists it with similar energy. If we watch ourselves honestly, we shall often find that we have begun to argue against a new idea even before it has been completely stated. – Arthur Koestler

Whenever the human race assembles to a number exceeding four, it cannot stand free speech. – Mark Twain

People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. - Adam Smith

There isn’t anything so grotesque or so incredible that the average human being can’t believe it. – Mark Twain

He who knows only his own side of the case, knows little of that. – John Stuart Mill

It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere. – Voltaire

People are generally better persuaded by the reasons which they have themselves discovered than by those which have come into the mind of others.- Blaise Pascal.

Illusion is the first of all pleasures. – Voltaire

The applause of a single human being is of great consequence. – Samuel Johnson

Current site changes and explanations

April 8th, 2007

Owing to the sudden interruption of service by the previous server administrator, who pulled the plug on the server without warning to this blog and thus blocked access to our draft posts, we are waiting for these to be restored before proceeding.
Update: Chris Lansdown of Powerblogs has now sent these through, for which we thank him.

No sabotage from AIDS goons suspected

Contrary to the suspicions of some subscribers, this is not (as far as we know) due to any sabotage by those discomfited by the copious commentary carried on this blog in the service of traditional science, meaning science based on the best scientific literature, even though the AIDS goons and their higher ups make it clear that they do not cherish that set of references as we do, and even are willing to adapt it to their claims rather than vice-versa. In fact, the HIV promoters in AIDS spend a good deal of their time trying to wrestle the round peg of their problematical studies to fit the square hole of their pet theory, with noticeably little result.

There are those who attack critics of their profitable paradigm by underhand methods including complaining to the critics’ employers that they are undermining the mainstream view in AIDS, but this interruption of SG (previously NAR) is not an example of this kind of nefarious deed, though others have experienced such outrages and have riposted in like manner, sad to say. We will provide details shortly.

The important point for outsiders to note is that good science doesn’t need underhand methods to defend it, so it should be clear that the mainstream defense squad are simply revealing their own theoretical weakness in adopting unscientific tactics in defending their subscription to HIV/AIDS with ad hominem tactics outside the scientific debate.

Some posts yet to be recovered

Unfortunately in the process of moving some NAR posts from January and February have been mysteriously removed or truncated but since the previous server provider at least backed up our data before he shut down the server, they should be gettable backable.

We will put them back just as soon as the stratospherically talented codemeister gets through his beer refueling and untangles the inappropriately complicated form in which this backup was provided to him by the socially challenged previous provider. Pictures that go with posts have been rescued and will be added back soonest also.

Update on the irresponsibility of programmers

In a shocking development much to be regretted, NAR has been sabotaged a second time, this time by none other than Frank Lusardi, the knowledgeable programmer of major sites during the dot com boom who has helped the AIDS Wiki and other sites run by HIV∫AIDS science critics, and who kindly helped NAR establish this new platform on BlueHost using WordPress, another blog software which is proving out well as a substitute and expansion from Powerblogs, which unfortunately pulled the plug on this blog without warning in a payment dispute with another party.

After doing some sterling work to make Science Guardian/New AIDS Review look like its Powerblogs incarnation, adding back facilities such as Show/Hide, the unpredictable Lusardi, who achieved the basics in the nick of time but took many months to do so, suddenly abandoned ship for no reason that we know of and has gone AWOL, replying to email only that he has suffered enough “abuse” and was going to leave the remaining adjustments in our amateur hands, though we have no idea how to carry them out. He has not been heard from since ie for over a month, so we feel we should apologize for the small hitches and gaps that remain, such as the fact that urls in the text are not colored.

We have no idea how to make this and other adjustments and if anyone knows WordPress and can decipher the programming of a copy of WordPress which has been changed in minor ways, we beg them to get in touch with

Among the things we want to fix are the temporary url we used while making the changeover – – back to etc, to make the font on Comment pages read the same as the font in the posts, to make search work properly, and to fix analytics.

Most important, we need to change the heading of the blog to accommodate some design changes, add a photo etc. We have a good design already prepared but we do not know how to make the replacement without danger of disrupting the blog.

Thanks all.

Update June 20 Wed

Taking our life in our hands we pulled as the basic url of this site and established it as, and to our amazement the entire blog did not vanish from the ether.

However, anyone who understands WordPress and how it might have been adapted in this case to display Science Guardian/New AIDS Review to look like its previous incarnation over at Powerblogs, please contact if you might help in correcting a few minor flaws left in this blog’s presentation.

One for example is that when you write a Page, it is listed at the top of the Page list in the right hand margin, but also at the top of the Post list, where it does not work as a link as it should, and needs removing. But only the unpredictable helper turned saboteur Frank Lusardi knows how to fix it, unless someone more rational steps forward.

(It seems possible that the sudden departure of the esteemed Frank without any adequate explanation for leaving us in the lurch may be connected to an email we forwarded to him as an example of rudeness on line. Possibly Frank mistook this as an email to him from the Editor of this site, and took umbrage, without checking the email more closely and refusing to answer further enquiries.

Another theory is that he was prone to a well known syndrome of codemasters who are initially helpful to ingenues setting up a site but quite soon get bored and move on, letting the hapless colleague sink or swim, in which they feel justified since they believe that what they are doing is quite simple and easily learned by the colleague if he or she sets their mind to it.

Update Aug 26 Sun

Problems persist. The display of this blog on Windows Internet Explorer is incorrect, it appears. Images may not display as anything but a dot, and the text may not differentiate between normal and bold font, rendering all as bold. This varies according to computer used. We apologize for the failure, which suggests to us the ongoing irresponsibility of Bill Gates, if not Frank Lusardi, whose sudden resignation we have not ever had explained. Possibly he was tortured by email from a certain Mexican compadre south of the border, whom he was also helping, and we got included in his reaction. Whatever the case, the ongoing failings of his adaptation of WordPress are a constant embarrassment to this blog, and we apologize mightily for the inconvenience.

Nov 29 2007 Time to get rid of the title New AIDS Review, the topic is too alienating to general readers. From now on, the blog will be known as Science Guardian.

2010 or whenever

Learned that I could simple add images to the heading alheader or the footer in Main Index Template by loading an image onto a WP blog to get the html and then inserting it.

Jul 21 2014

To our amazement this blog updated through the years without breaking. Recently we had a bad scare when the images suddenly distributed themselves all over the map on the front page, though not in the individual posts. WP expert Gallen at Bluehost was unable to help but after he gave up we were able to identify the problem ourselves.

The cause was simply that we had included the image caption lines in putting up a couple of images. The cure was simply to remove them, when everything went back to normal. Why the blog updated to the current WP 3.9.1 OK but still wont accept caption lines in image html is unknown.

Jul 21 Alex at Bluehost guided me how to change all the pseudonym entries under Truthseeker – all the posts – to my real name Anthony Liversidge, our having decided to go public and take full responsibility for our attempt to enlighten the populace on the horrid perpetration of a false premise in curing HIV/AIDS, which has been condemned and rejected in the highest literature since 1987 and 1988 without valid rebuttal anywhere or any attempt at rebuttal in the same peer reviewed journals (Cancer Research and the Proceedings of the National Academy).

All post ascribed to Truthseeker are now marked By Anthony Liversidge. This was done as follows:

Bluehost Control Panel — Database Tools – admin — Sign in –see on left wp01 and select — select wpusers table — change truthseeker to Anthony Liversidge on userlogin usernicename and display name. Hit Go.

Done! Except for some reason it didnt change Truthseeker Comments. Hmm wonder why.
