Truth, beauty and paradigm power in science and society

I am Nicolaus Copernicus, and I approve of this blog

News, views and reviews measured against professional literature in peer reviewed journals (adjusted for design flaws and bias), well researched books, authoritative encyclopedias (not the bowdlerized Wiki entries on controversial topics) and the investigative reporting and skeptical studies of courageous original thinkers among academics, philosophers, researchers, scholars, authors, filmmakers and journalists.

Supporting the right of exceptional minds to free speech, publication, media coverage and funding against the crowd prejudice, leadership resistance, monetary influences and internal professional politics of the paradigm wars of cancer, HIV(not)AIDS, evolution, global warming, cosmology, particle physics, macroeconomics, information technology, religions and cults, health, medicine, diet and nutrition.

I am Albert Einstein, and I heartily approve of this blog, insofar as it seems to believe both in science and the importance of intellectual imagination, uncompromised by out of date emotions such as the impulse toward conventional religious beliefs, national aggression as a part of patriotism, and so on. As I once remarked, the further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge. Certainly the application of the impulse toward blind faith in science whereby authority is treated as some kind of church is to be deplored. As I have also said, the only thing that ever interfered with my learning was my education. I am Freeman Dyson, and I approve of this blog, but would warn the author that life as a heretic is a hard one, since the ignorant and the half informed, let alone those who should know better, will automatically trash their betters who try to enlighten them with independent thinking, as I have found to my sorrow in commenting on "global warming" and its cures.

Although science has led to the generally high living standards that most of the industrialized world enjoys today, the astounding discoveries underpinning them were made by a tiny number of courageous, out-of-step, visionary, determined, and passionate scientists working to their own agenda and radically challenging the status quo. – Donald W. When even the brightest mind in our world has been trained up from childhood in a superstition of any kind, it will never be possible for that mind, in its maturity, to examine sincerely, dispassionately, and conscientiously any evidence or any circumstance which shall seem to cast a doubt upon the validity of that superstition. Vaxxed Movie Ads Proudly Censored by the Village Voice’s Will Bourne

How are the mighty fallen! Voice acts against free speech and anti-authoritarian science doc

No evidence that editor has any deep research on topic, but joins media and institutional attack

(left) The director of VAXXED is Andrew Wakefield who lost his medical license for financial dealings but who reportedly is vindicated by the reversal of the associated condemnation of his colleague.

The apparently dutifully antisocial but politically compliant and scientifically credulous Will Bourne, who came back recently once again to edit the Village Voice in an otherwise admirable expansion of its journalism, has this week run a top of page letter to readers saying his publication “vehemently” does not support the Vaxxed: From Coverup to Catastrophe documentary (at Angelika at Houston 3.20 pm and 5.30 pm daily till next Thu only 3.20 pm) reporting vaccinations can indeed multiply autism sevenfold according to part of a definitive study covered up by shredding by the CDC, and that he returned the money paid for an ad last week for the film and cancelled a ‘campaign’ for it on line.

Dear Readers, Last week’s paper contained an advertisement for the movie Vaxxed, which may have caused some confusion about whether we support the film’s position that vaccinations can cause autism and other developmental problems in children.
We want to be very clear that the Voice vehemently disagrees with that position and believes it to be contrary to the vast majority of scientific information on the subject. We believe vaccinations are an essential safeguard of the public health for New York City and the world in general.
While the print ad found its way into the paper, we canceled an online campaign and returned the money for both to the advertiser.
Thank you for supporting the Voice!
Will Bourne Editor in Chief

Apparently Bourne or the publisher are unaware of the Constitutional protection of free speech against just such ill informed censorship and the fact that he or his publisher are by definition under researched in the science (as are most scientists) and as lay editors have no business taking sides in a scientific dispute whatever the position of government or scientific institutions on it, especially since the truth is usually buried far deeper than their puny efforts at skimming the media coverage and official pronouncements will discover, and official pronouncements are often political or backed by studies which have to be carefully assessed from an independent viewpoint since often compromised by incomplete controls and presumptive premises.

Well, this is par for the course for a paper that acted for many years as one of the megaphones for the HIV/AIDS boys despite the fact that the highest peer reviewed articles in Cancer Research and the Proceedings of the National Academy as long ago as 1987 and 1989 dismissed the notion that HIV was causing immune collapse with extensive analysis and 400 footnotes still unchallenged in the same establishment journals to this day; ie 100% unrefuted in 29 years. But of course the editors and writers informed by the NIAID and CDC have not had time to look into intra mural science politics let alone read scientific literature, which would take too long to fathom because it is designed to be unintelligible to the layman who might question the direction of funding.

Very understandable. But a sad indication that the decline of print and investigative journalism began far earlier than the tsunami of the Internet.

So how valuable is VAXXED the movie?

We will post next on the fact that our viewing of VAXXED on Tue 19th revealed that the movie was an impeccable presentation of incontrovertible evidence that Wakefield’s scientific judgement over a decade ago that the link between autism and MMR should be carefully investigated was correct.

The film plays telephone testimony from William Thompson a CDC scientist who was responsible for the statistical data and analysis on the CDC’s definitive study on the question, and shows paper evidence, that the data on 3000 kids studied for reactions to early MMR suffered autism at much higher, statistically significant rates of as much as sevenfold normal in one group, so called “isolated” cases where no other health problems had been noted. In a scandal which seems likely to blow up to a national and international furore the data was sat on for two years and then dumped into the circular file and shredded, much to Thompson’s chagrin, embarrassment and shame.

Here’s a Fox News clip today on the movie noted by investigative reporter and writer Celia Farber at her truthbarrier.com in which the television channel sets a very good example by respectfully interview Andrew Wakefield the director and center of the controversy over the link between autism and early MMR and Polly Tommey, the producer and co-founder Autism Media Channel:

VAXXED has ended at the Angelika (last showing was yesterday Thu Apr 22 at 3.20pm) but will be shown on Sunday 2-4pm at the Manhattan Film Festival with Wakefield and Polly on stage following the projection. It will also be shown at the Village East cinema 5 times a day for the next week or longer (that’s the same chain as Angelika).

Meanwhile a crack reporter writing on the controversy has learned there will almost certainly be a Congressional hearing by the House Oversight Committee on the issue of the CDC behavior in this matter taking the testimony of William Thompson, the honorable CDC whistleblower who did the statistics for the CDC study, whose group after two years followed instructions from higher ups and tossed and shredded the key data, showing three fold and seven fold increases in autism among a black kids group and an otherwise healthy “isolated” group.

What with another CDC whistleblower suit in Utah following a successful suit in Italy against MMR on autism grounds there will in the end be two whistleblower billionaires, it seems, once they get their deserved payouts.

Moreover, the issue remaining to be opened like a can of worms is the question If three vaccines are too many what about the sixty others children are now being given, according to observers? Did Julie Gerbeding the CDC head responsible for policy until Christmas 2009 jump ship to what will eventually or soon become a sinking Merck? Interested observers wait to see. Come to that, will this scandal sink other large bodies as well as Merck as well as the CDC? Are we entering a new era where even the NIH will be held to account for HIV being the wrong cause of AIDS? Are we witnessing a crumbling of the politico-scientific structure that will remind us of the effect of Katrina in submerging Lower Manhattan.
